Where do we go from here?

A group of WD High School staff met during the week of Dec 7-11 to begin discussion of Hawk Habits, year 2.

So, as you look at the details provided about the Public Victory scaffold in the pictures below, where do you think we should focus? What are the three most important things that we need to introduce this year and build on for next year? Please comment below (you need a gmail account)

I think how you have them listed, habit 6,5,4 then an overview looks good.
Team work- working together to accomplish something. I wish there was something that the entire high school had to work on where everyone was a participant to a final positive outcome. So many times students are ridiculed by what they do or say and they just give up.

I think we need to begin with habit 5 and then 6. Understanding yourself and being able to share this and identify with others is necessary. These two habits can overlap because as the "self" understanding develops the identity with others will begin forming, which will lead to team work. If the relationships can be developed in a positive way, we should be able to see more positive attitudes in all areas. These skills should be taught and retaught, and practiced as a part of our education process. A lot of positive interaction goes a long way in developing a positive image.

When we do habit 4 - Win/Win attitude with the advisees, I'd like us to use a combination of win/win games (including role playing), various discussion questions to process(including how to apply the "games" lessons to the game of life), and power point presentations to be sure everyone is on the same page(include coverage of the Covey habit 4 "basics"). For habit 5 I hope we actually introduce and practice empathic communication skills in the AA room. It may be more effective to first model them in a large group setting with all the juniors and seniors, so again we're all on the same page. Mike Morrison had the idea of doing the empathic communication in pairs where each person has to present the thoughts and feelings of their partner to the small group, on various teen or social issues. Habit 6 - synergize - would give us a great opportunity with the juniors to begin the process of identifying various school and community projects to be completed their senior year. They could be killing two birds with one stone, 1.beginning to work together to investigate something real at the end of their junior year - an important project 2.which they then complete with their group during the senior year, making 12th grade more meaningful, too!

For the juniors, we need to give them time to work together to come up with their senior service opportunity. Maybe we could provide several speakers to inspire them. Then we need to step back a bit and see what they are able to come up with. Maybe we need to utilize the various organizations already in place to see if any leaders come forward. For the seniors, we need to give them a small opportunity this spring to actually do some significant service, something they can be proud of.

1. As a student, I would want some idea of where this is going, as some of them might not be seeing "service project" on the road ahead. If they have that "end" in mind, they might be more willing to buy into the process, kind of like knowing that a benchmark assessment will eventually be happening and how this raises the level of concern.

2. With that, I wonder if there is something that not only the Juniors could do, but other grade levels as well? Plant some seeds for future planning of individual projects? Could there be a West Delaware Service afternoon where everyone goes out and does something? I've known schools that have held an "auction" fundraiser to acquire a "person for the day" (West Dubuque Showchoir went to Florida this way) to do raking, painting, fixing up, etc...would the community have a need for 20 groups to go out and do something? Maybe the bank would "hire" Coates AA group to re-wrap all those pennies... During the flood, student sandbaggers were plentiful...maybe students just need opportunities to direct themselves toward...

3. I remember retreats, TECs and Antiochs of being in a room with lots of people but still being in a small group, and getting that sense of 'even though I'm a little uncomfortable right now, we're all in this together'. That's a feeling that I would like to see generated, rather than isolationism in the AA rooms. Various teachers say how their AA students are unwilling to participate, are difficult, etc. so perhaps if they could see that every other group is buying into it or at least participating, then maybe they would too. This would also help facillitators who maybe aren't sure of exactly what they are supposed to be doing be able to have others nearby to ask questions of, get ideas from, etc., things that aren't possible in a room by yourself. Teaming was mentioned in the Jr.-Sr. AA meeting this morning as a very positive aspect of running an AA event. So why not team everyone in the grade level together and perhaps create some synergy?
